Within the last six years, the trend in the Johns Creek roofing industry is to install ridge vents instead of the usual box or turtle vents. Essentially, the ridge vents provide a more efficient air flow for the hot air in the attic. So, are ridge vents actually better? Are they aesthetically more appealing?
Ridge Vents are Now the Industry Standard
First, an understanding of how your attic breaths and why it is important to your roof. With a normal attic, air is drawn up through the soffits by the warm air rising out of the vent at or near the ridge or peak of the roof. This air flow cools the attic although in summer time it keeps the attic for becoming excessively hot. The excessive heat cooks the asphalt shingle and makes them brittle.
Ridge Vents Help Your Attic Breath More Easily
Now box or turtle vents usually are installed on the backside of the Johns Creek roof facing away from the front of the house near the ridge. An average Johns Creek roof would only have five or six vents. The vents provide a hole about four to six inches across for air to escape. That is only two and a half to three feet of ventilation. Very inefficient.

Still, there are some case where ridge and box vents most be used together. Some Johns Creek roofs have high peaks only giving a few feet to vent a large attic area. Usually when the ridge length is less than two feet, box vents need to be used as well to provide greater air flow.
